Western Pennsylvania Undergraduate Psychology Conference (WPUPC)

Mission Statement
The Western Pennsylvania Undergraduate Psychology Conference (WPUPC) is dedicated to providing students with opportunities to present research in a supportive, academic environment. Â This conference allows students to grow as individuals, students, and psychologists while regional institutions maintain strong academic relations.
2025 WPUPC Information
The 2025 will be a joint meeting with the Laural Highlands Undergraduate Conference. The Laurel Highlands Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference was founded in 1998. The conference provides a forum for undergraduate students in psychology programs across the region to present their research to fellow students and faculty members. Over the years, we have had numerous students from various institutions participate, and many respected figures in the psychology field provide keynote addresses for the conference. This first-of-its-kind joint meeting will expand participation to allow for more shared opportunities and networking. Along with a strong schedule of undergraduate research, the event will include breakfast, lunch, and keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Was.
Dr. Chris Was will give a talk entitled "Mind-Wandering and Task Performance: Not a Simple Relationship" regarding his and others' work on the often deleterious yet sometimes beneficial process of thinking off task (aka mind-wandering). Dr. Was obtained his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah and is a Professor of Psychology at Kent State University. His research interests include the broad area of working memory models, and his research program has focused on testing different models and aspects of working memory to determine how processing limits in working memory affect complex cognitive processes such as comprehension. Research in this area provides evidence that working memory as an attention-driven storage capacity and the facilitation of procedural memory (strengthening of prior cognitive operations) are related yet independent. Dr. Was' studies in this area consist of both experimental studies, as well as individual difference studies. Another area of interest involves metacognition and student self-regulated learning. Research in this field includes in-class experiments designed to test interventions designed to increase students' knowledge monitoring abilities, as well as studies aimed at increasing the ability to measure students’ metacognition. We are excited that Dr. Was will attend the conference to give this year’s keynote address.
Students can submit their abstracts online using the online submission form link. Each presentation should be submitted only once by the first author. Additional authors will need to register for the conference using the attendee form link. Presenters (oral and poster) should prepare an APA-style abstract that is no more than 800 characters (approximately 150 words) on their word processor, proof and spell check, and then copy it into the submission form. First authors who complete the submission form are also automatically registered for the conference; all additional authors will need to complete the registration form to attend the conference. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. EDT, Friday, April 4.
Registration and Submission links and information are found on the 2025 conference website: .
Brief History
The first Western Pennsylvania Undergraduate Psychological Conference (WPUPC) was held at Alliance College in 1973 and was comprised of six institutions. Since that first meeting, we have grown to include 12 member institutions. More importantly, thousands of students have presented at WPUPC before graduating and making an impact on their chosen field.
